If you have been granted asylum or refugee status in Spain, you have a path to Spanish nationality that is shorter than most other routes. After five years of legal residence in Spain, you can apply, compared with the ten years generally required for most other foreign nationals.

That residence needs to be legal, continuous, and immediately before your application. There is one notable exception: if you are married to a Spanish citizen, you only need one year of legal residence before applying.

What you'll need to show

Beyond the residence requirement, Article 22.4 of the Civil Code requires you to demonstrate good civic conduct and a sufficient degree of integration into Spanish society. In practice, this generally means passing the CCSE exam on Spain's constitutional and social knowledge, and, unless you are exempt, a Spanish language exam (DELE A2 or higher).

On top of the general documentation required for any nationality application, you will also need a certificate or resolution from the Ministry of the Interior's asylum and refugee office confirming your status.
