If you were considering buying property in Spain as a route to residency, this page used to point you to the property-based "Golden Visa": buy a property worth €500,000 or more and receive residence in Spain. That route no longer exists.
The Golden Visa programme was abolished with effect from 3 April 2025, and Spain no longer grants residence permits on the basis of a qualifying property purchase.
What happens if you already hold one
If you obtained your Golden Visa before it was abolished, your existing permit remains valid for its original term, and renewal is still available for now provided you keep the property and meet the other conditions, though this is not guaranteed to remain the case indefinitely.
What to consider instead
Buying property in Spain no longer grants residency on its own. If living in Spain is the goal, the realistic routes now are the non-lucrative visa (for those who can support themselves without working in Spain), the digital nomad visa (for remote workers employed or contracted abroad), the entrepreneur visa (for an innovative business project), or a standard work visa tied to Spanish employment.
Each of these has its own income, insurance, and documentation requirements, so it is worth getting tailored advice before assuming which route fits your situation.
